What it is
Women of Astoria is a community storytelling project dedicated to highlighting the women who shape everyday life in Astoria, Queens. Through portraits, short stories, and neighborhood reflections, the project documents the people who contribute to the culture, care, creativity, and connection that make the neighborhood feel like home.
The project focuses on the women whose contributions often go unseen but are deeply felt: the small business owners who greet customers by name, the teachers and caregivers who support local families, the artists and organizers who bring people together, the longtime residents who hold neighborhood memory, and the newcomers building their lives here.
Women of Astoria celebrates the idea that community leadership happens in many forms — not only through formal positions or professional achievements, but through everyday acts of presence, care, creativity, and neighborliness.
Purpose
The goal of Women of Astoria is to strengthen community connection by documenting and sharing the stories of the women who contribute to the neighborhood’s identity. By highlighting these voices and experiences, the project aims to:
• Celebrate the diversity and richness of women’s experiences in Astoria
• Build stronger connections among neighbors
• Support local women-owned businesses and community initiatives
• Preserve the stories and perspectives that shape neighborhood life
• Inspire future generations of women and girls growing up in the community
How it Works
The project will primarily live on a digital storytelling platform (such as Instagram), featuring regular profiles of women in the community. Each feature may include a portrait, a short story about their connection to Astoria, and reflections on what the neighborhood means to them.
Stories may highlight women from many walks of life, including entrepreneurs, artists, educators, volunteers, parents, community advocates, longtime residents, and new arrivals.
The tone of the project is warm, authentic, and community-centered. Rather than focusing only on professional achievements, the project emphasizes personal connection to place, everyday leadership, and the ways women help create belonging within the neighborhood.
Future Vision
While Women of Astoria begins with a focus on Astoria, the project is designed as a model that could expand to other neighborhoods in the future — celebrating the women who shape communities across New York City and beyond.
At its heart, Women of Astoria is about recognizing that neighborhoods are built not only through buildings and institutions, but through people — and that women play a central role in creating the culture, care, and community that make places thrive.
